NJ Vehicle Lettering Law in New Jersey

What New Jersey commercial vehicles are required to display.

New Jersey requires identification on commercial vehicles, and the requirement is easy to fall foul of by accident. Getting it right is inexpensive; getting stopped for it is not.

What the job involves

In broad terms, a commercial vehicle registered in New Jersey is expected to display the name of the owner or lessee on both sides of the vehicle, legible from a reasonable distance in daylight, along with the identifying registration information required for the class of vehicle. Vehicles operating under federal motor carrier rules also carry USDOT numbers, and trades with state licensing — home improvement contractors, plumbers, electricians, HVAC and others — have their own display requirements for license numbers.

The practical questions we get asked are always the same: how big do the letters need to be, does a magnetic panel count, does it have to be on both sides, and what about a pickup with a cap. Letter height and placement are what enforcement actually looks at, and lettering that is too small, low-contrast, partly obscured by a ladder rack or peeling at the edges is what draws attention.

How we do it

We are a lettering company, not a law firm, so treat this page as orientation rather than legal advice, and confirm specifics for your class of vehicle and trade licensing with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission or your own counsel. What we can do is make sure what goes on the truck is correctly sized, permanently applied, high contrast and positioned where an inspector expects to find it.

Most compliance lettering is a same-visit job. Name, town, and the required numbers, cut in premium vinyl and applied at your yard in under two hours, with the option to add your phone number and trade while we are there so the truck starts earning its keep.

How mobile lettering works

STEP 1

Call or send a photo

Tell us the vehicle, the wording and roughly when you need it. A photo of the truck answers most of our questions in one shot.

STEP 2

Approve the proof

We lay the design out on a template of your actual vehicle and send it back for approval. Nothing is cut until you say yes.

STEP 3

We come to you

We arrive at your yard or job site with everything needed, prep the panels and apply the graphics. Most vehicles are back in service the same day.

NJ Vehicle Lettering Law — questions we get asked

Is this legal advice?

No. We letter trucks for a living and this page is general orientation. Confirm requirements for your vehicle class and trade license with the NJ MVC or your attorney.

Do magnetic signs satisfy the requirement?

Magnets come off, get stolen and hide damage underneath. Permanent lettering is the safer answer and costs little more.

How large should the letters be?

Requirements vary by vehicle class. We size lettering to be clearly legible at a distance in daylight, which is the practical standard.

Can you letter my truck today?

Often yes. Call and ask what is open — compliance lettering is quick, and we come to you.
